MARIO'S WINES
DOMESTIC-INTERNATIONAL CAREFULLY SELECTED FOR YOUR DRINKING PLEASURE |
|
CHIANTI |
Chianti is a fruity, fresh wine from the Tuscany region. The primary grape is Sangovese.
Young vintages-good with pasta and meat. Aged or Reserva vintages-good with lamb, game, cheese plates, and pasta.
In Italian wines, 1997 vintage is considered to be the "vintage of the century". The 1998 vintage is considered to take a very close second place. There are many other excellent vintages for you to enjoy.
|
SANGIOVESE |
The most important grape variety, red or white, of Central Italy is the Sangiovese. More ruby in color, marked acidity and high levels of tannin. At last count, there are 14 different clones in two basic categories-the grosso and piccolo. The grosso tends to be more important in terms of quality and the best of the chianti clones. It usually has a fuller body with a lot of berries and fruitiness.

MONTEPULCIANO |
The finest Montepulciano comes from Abruzzi, the rugged mountainous zone on Italy's Adriatic Coast. Although it can include up to 15% of the Sangiovese grape, the best versions are made soley with Montepulciano. The wines range from soft and quaffable, to darker, more concentrated with a slightly chocolatey edge and to the intensely peppery, velvety, and complex versions.

VALPOLICELLA |
Valpolicella is not a grape. The grapes used are Rondinella, Rossignola, Molinara, Negrara, Corvina and Pelara. Light and fruity with a slight bitterness. A touch heavier bodied than Bardolino. Should be consumed young.
Amarone is made when the harvest is layed out on large tarps to dry out in the sun which increases the sugar content. The result is a very dry, very concentrated red wine with a high alcohol content which ages wonderfully.
